Back to Basics: Mahayana as Living Buddhism

Mahayana Buddhism is widely known for its philosophical depth and diversity. What is less widely known is how Mahayana Buddhism functions in the lives of people in family and community today. In this dialogue, Aaron Proffitt will discuss the history of Mahayana Buddhism, as well as the ways that this vibrant Buddhist tradition comes to life as wisdom and compassion in our everyday lives.

Meet The Speaker: Dr. Aaron Proffitt is an associate professor of Japanese studies at the University at Albany-SUNY, and holds a PhD in Buddhist Studies from the University of Michigan. His book, Esoteric Pure Land Buddhism was recently published by the University of Hawaii, Pure Land Buddhist Studies Series. He is also a Certified Minister’s Assistant with the New York Buddhist Church, co-founder of Albany Buddhist Sangha, and aspirant for tokudo ordination in October 2025.
